The Trouble With Being a Geeky Fan

Letting go of attachments

I don’t know how TV networks can justify to themselves this four or five month hiatus between episodes, in the same season of a series.

Yes, I’m probably wearing my old-man pants, shaking my cane-wielding fist to the sky. I’m probably the only one who sees something horribly wrong with this. But hey, this is my place.

FlashForward, you and I are quits. Everything that made the show compelling in the first place – the opportunity for water cooler talk, the speculation – that’s all gone. All I can remember is the horrible, horrible acting of Joseph Fiennes. Maybe when he acts in British, he’s okay, but I can’t get past his two looks: Grumpy and Dopey. Maybe the bar was set too high by Lost for me to enjoy you properly, but why can’t I expect a show that started out that strongly to remain that strong? I certainly have no qualms about saying goodbye to you, since you haven’t been on the air in two or three months.

V, I’m very disappointed in you. You wave Alan Tudyk under my nose, with the promise of reviving one of my favourite series from the 80s. Then you not only make him a bad guy, but you kill him off right away. I don’t mind any of the actors, or the characters. The pacing was all right, tending a little to the slow side of things. But you aren’t on the air right now, are you? You’re screwing around with your agenda, trying to squeeze the last little bit of market share. You’re doing this for all the wrong reasons. You’re not there to entertain people, you’re not even there to sell soap. You’re there to entice people to sell soap with numbers that are completely artificial. This is the same bullshit that got Kings canceled. Don’t think I don’t have my eye on you, ABC.

Glee, I don’t really care. I watched a couple of your episodes. But my wife is very much looking forward to you coming back. And you’re gone almost until summer. What the hell is that?

All of this is pretty much leading toward me not watching any more new dramas until they are out on DVD.

  1. I’m so holding my cane up with you. I was looking at the first season of Fragil Rock (okay not on the same page as the shows you’re talking about, but still) and it had something like 41 episodes. Now a series has 18-20 shows a season, breaks for every holiday, including ground hog day, and we’re supposed to know when the new episodes air? Kyle and I almost always watch last season on DVD while this season drags it’s butt to finish, so we can remember the story line between 20 week hiatuses. Well, we do/did for House, Glee, The Tudors, and Heroes. We never did get into Lost, IT seems there’s too many season to go back for now. And, YEAH, what’s with a show that starts out exceptional fills up it’s viewer base and then settles for mediocrity.

  2. Erron: Lost is definitely worth slogging through all those seasons for. There are cheesy moments, but it’s compelling television. I’m very glad that the Double-B talked me into watching it. Now that I’ve hooked Kim, I can talk about Lost at work AND at home.

  3. regarding V, from the podcasts/websites/etc I frequent, I heard that one of the reasons for their extended super hiatus is that there was some intense behind-the-scenes regiggering. As in, once the network saw the result of what they’d ordered, they fired a bunch of writers and hired a bunch more, and that cycle repeated perhaps?? not sure and I’m not going to google it to be precise.

Although flashforward? I heard the executive producer position was a revolving door not unlike a whore at an out of town rodeo extravaganza

And y’know, when the episodes cost a million or two a pop (I’m guessing), I can understand the studio’s reluctance to just let a show go and see what happens. But also, if I got fired for making two or three bad blog posts in a row, I would most certainly be websiteless

Oh, and Glee? I watched the pilot. That was enough for me. It would require a bribe of monetary significance for me to revisit that…. that… that whatever it was. who cares, I accept that people like it, but I have no interest.

I really regret FlashForward, because honestly it’s not often that just hearing the elevator-pitch-premise of a show intregues me enough to watch 10-12 episodes of anything. But alas, it was ruined. I feel like, can we just give this premise to Liam, or Cliff, or Chad, or Rob-Double-B and give them a few episodes? Because I’m quite sure it would be superior to whatever ended up on screen? Even if you (liam) had made the mistake of hiring joseph finnes.. I’m quite confident that by episode 3 or 4 I would have been treated to a wonderful episode where he is eviscerated and burned to death. I mean, that’s enteratinment

Plus, they had the hobbit guy! And the fat dude that tortured him, y’know, whatshisname… and they still couldn’t keep my interest? I watch approximately 100 hours of television a day.. and I actively avoided it on my pvr. i hate the show more for squandering it’s opportunity.

  4. James, I have a confession. Since the season ended, I went back and watched the episodes that got by me.

My feeling is one of remorse. Remorse for the fact that the series was canceled.

What a great finish to the series. I think the tv world is going to be worse off for not having this show around next season.

    But that’s just me.

  5. well, I’m not going to fault you for it. You saying things like that makes me want to go watch it to see if I agree with you… but I also realize the chances are a bit slim that that’ll happen

Ah well…. When does game of thrones start? the hype for it is incredible and I’m already looking forwadr to that one
